Alumni return to the Blacktop for an evening of Stormy Petrels Basketball
The Alumni Basketball Tailgate held on February 9, 2024, was a night to remember, bringing together past and present members of the Oglethorpe community. Alumni arrived decked out in their Oglethorpe gear as the Blacktop at Dorough Fieldhouse buzzed with excitement for the men’s and women’s basketball teams playing against Sewanee.
“Good thing I wasn’t looking for a quiet evening! The basketball tailgate at Dorough was anything but quiet. The noise level was incredible,” said Jenn Brown ’04. “It was great to stand alongside alumni and President McClymond and cheer on the Lady Petrels to victory in an epic double overtime.”
The women’s basketball game kicked off the evening and kept the crowd on their feet during an instant classic leading to a 97-92 double-overtime victory over Sewanee. The men’s basketball game was also thrilling, but the Stormy Petrels ultimately fell short against the Sewanee Tigers with a final score of 89-68.
Alumni left the tailgate with hearts full of memories and a renewed sense of pride in Stormy Petrels Athletics.
Charis Hanberry ’88 summed up her experience by saying, “The alumni basketball tailgate and the games were a really good time. Especially the women’s game—what an exciting and fun game to watch! Coming back to campus and stepping into the excitement of Friday-night basketball brings back all kinds of great memories. You don’t realize, until you’re here again, how fun it is to share the experience with your old classmates and teammates!”
