Class of 1973 inducted into the Golden Petrel Society

Oglethorpe class reunions have a tradition of reconnecting classmates, allowing alumni to reflect on their shared admiration for the university. Alumni Weekend is all about rekindling those connections that last a lifetime.

This year, we recognized graduates of 1973 as they were officially inducted into the Golden Petrel Society and commemorated their 50th class reunion. Members of this class, and a few classes of the prior years, received medallions during the Alumni Awards, Athletic Hall of Fame, and Golden Petrel Society induction ceremony on April 21. Recipients who joined us on campus for this special celebration included Gordon Anderson ’73, Charlie Anderson ’73, Diana Blake ’73, Steve Malone ’73, Paul Hudson 72, and John Kufel ’71.

While celebrating with fellow Golden Petrels at dinner, Kufel reminisced about his time on campus. “We all knew the school was a special place,” said Kufel. “The school is better, the school looks better. I enjoyed coming back and being here with everyone, and I am so proud of all the positive changes that have taken place.”

Eli Arnold ’06, library director and university librarian, led a campus tour for the class of 1973, and it’s safe to say a lot has changed. Attendees viewed yearbooks and memorabilia from their time on campus.

Golden Petrels are often invited back to campus for additional recognition during other campus events. Those who were unable to attend were honored, and many will be sent their medal of honor by mail.
