Soccer Tailgate Brings Alumni Back to Campus

by Russell Kramer '09

Oglethorpe Alumni came together on Friday, October 6, for a memorable evening as our men’s and women’s soccer squads squared off against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern at the Turf Field inside the OU track.

Former soccer team members and Petrel fans alike gathered to celebrate memories of the past and success of the current men’s and women’s teams paired with catered finger foods and drinks.

“There is nothing more exciting than welcoming back alumni to campus to cheer on the home team and share our Petrel Pride,” said Kathryn Henderson ’17, director of alumni engagement and giving. “Rain or shine, Petrels know how to have a good time!”

Alumni braved the rain and were treated to an exciting evening of soccer on the field. In the opener, the women stormed back to score in the 90th minute to secure an important 1-1 draw, while the men scored in the opening minute and went on to win, 4-0, over BSC in convincing fashion in the nightcap.

“It is always special to come back to campus and be back in the heart of Atlanta,” said Nick Mosley ’07, former OU Men’s Soccer standout. “When you combine the excitement of reconnecting with alumni and the results on the field, it makes for a special evening of celebration.”

In addition to the success on the pitch, the gathering alumni got to take in all the recent updates to the facility that included the expansion of the turf, new stands, new sports information press box and new banners that help emphasize the Petrel branding.

“Seeing the support from our alumni was incredible and really helped motivate our two programs,” said Jon Akin, head coach of the OU Men’s Soccer team. “What makes Oglethorpe special are the people. The connections they make and Petrel Pride they share go well beyond just any one game or season, and that was clearly evident again during this wonderful event.”

In the end a successful evening of fellowship and reconnecting was had by all alumni as both programs continued to push toward the goal of postseason play. The women are now unbeaten in three-straight fixtures and have won four of their last seven matches, while the men remain unbeaten in league play and have won seven-straight contests.

Recent graduate Alyssa Merletti ’23 also valued the opportunity to network while cheering on the Petrels. “What I enjoyed most about this event was meeting some of Oglethorpe’s staff and alumni and getting some much-needed career advice. I’d encourage alumni from my class to interact with social posts to learn more about events that are coming up, spread the word, and grab a group of friends to go with.”

Alumni events are in full swing and you do not want to miss out on your next opportunity to visit campus. Attending these events are some of the best ways to reconnect with fellow Petrels and expand your overall network. There are so many exciting things planned!
